THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PRAGMATIC APPROPRIATENESS IN ESL CULTURE
Main Article Content
Abstract
Language learners are required to adhere to several conventions in which their behavior is not only important but correct. They may also benefit from learning something about behavioral standards to understand speech acts in context. Pragmatic incompetence is described as the inability of language learners to maintain meaningful relationships as a result of their inability to use language appropriately and understand expected outcomes. An ESL and especially an EFL curriculum should include the teaching of pragmatics if language learning is the primary motivation. Pragmatic ability should be considered as an integral part of language competence. In order to provide students with pragmatic knowledge, it is recommended to hide the importance of pragmatic competence first.
